Remember remember the reason for Movember…

Plenty of people swan around the month of November parading their facial growth, demonstrating their testosterone and overall new found 80’s throwback demeanour.
Personally, I love it. Keep the pre-Christmas tash coming i say!
But do we remember why we encourage this month long facial hair fad?
‘Movember’ was started in 2003 in Australia by a group of guys who started a non for profit organisation raising money for prostate and testicular cancers (aka cancers that only affect men.)
It estimated that 219 000 will die this year alone from prostate cancer and having experienced prostate cancer a little too close to home in my own family, statistics on it being a ‘lazy cancer’ are in no way an encouragement.
My time on oncology wards allowed time to work with prostate cancer patients. It frequently revealed lovely middle aged men- on the brink of enjoying their retirement. Take from their families after a delayed diagnosis.
The campaign of ‘no – shave November’ has expanded to raise awareness of Male mental health and ‘MOvement’ to encourage getting active as part of a healthy lifestyle.
So basically whilst growing your tash, grooming your handlebars or curling your whiskers, just remember why you got involved in this hairy tradition…..
