When we say we ‘need’…do we actually mean that we ‘want?’

I’ve always been someone that has relied on lots of extra curricular ‘support.’ By this I mean-nail salons, hair dressers, hair extensions, fake tanning booths, gyms with lots of equipment, barbells, must have a rack, personal trainers, soft play areas, plays areas, stuff, stuff, stuff.

For example- I’ve always loved having a fun personal trainer in a thriving well populated gym. There would be nights when I couldn’t make a session for one reason or another and hence believed that I ‘couldn’t train.’ No gym, no personal trainer…might as well write off the training today.

Yet these last few weeks (rolling in to months) has allowed me to rewind back to days during school and university when I couldn’t afford such luxuries.

I used to push myself to train independently on a very regular basis. I ran, I did basic weights in a poorly equipped old school/university gym and I swam. At most I attended YMCA classes with a bunch of fit old guys including nothing other than very basic work out routines to songs such as ‘Eye of the Tiger.’

Yet fast forward ten years to the start of lockdown and I’m worried that I won’t be physically capable of gaining motivation to train independently. Plus if I do train-how could I possibly push myself to the extent that I like to be pushed by a PT? And how could I maintain any form of real strength without my usually weights and fandangled equipment?

Yet surprisingly I have managed to train more regularly and increase strength (initially without the use of these weights on the video but with only body weight and fancy resistance bands (KO8 Fitness-ok these still classified as ‘stuff.’)

It’s just a really freeing realisation that you are more capable than you realise. That you don’t need to carry around as many ‘needs’ and to instead classify them as ‘wants’ or ‘nice to have.’

I’ve cut my hair, I’ve clipped my own nails, I’ve done my own fake tan, I’ve ‘make believe’ played with my children without any toys or multicoloured soft play rooms for assistance. I’ve done it on my own and I feel lighter for this realisation.

Of course after lock down, I will still attend gym session and PT sessions-I enjoy them. I will still take my children and myself to the hairdresser (they are currently sporting mullets thanks to my handy scissor work) and I will still go to drench myself in fake tan.

And that’s all fine! Why not?! I choose to and I want to do these things.

But what is nice is to have the freedom to know I don’t have to.
No pressure.
No requirement and no rush.
If I can’t make the nail salon this week-I can sort it myself.
If I can’t make the gym this week, I can do a HIIT workout from home.
If my husband has the car, I can bake with my boys and get them involved. No need to take them anywhere.

It’s freeing and it’s wonderful (Corona Virus or any other illness for that matter is not…just for the record.)
