Do as the Russians do.. work smart, not hard.

Currently my dear friend and wonderful PT @coachmeg_93 has decided it would be fun for me to do some German Volume Training High number of reps and all round high intensity training.
And this is how most of us work out at the gym. We work out to our maximum and await our DOMS 24-48 hours later with great satisfaction that we worked out long and hard enough for it to count. If we don’t leave a CrossFit session at a near Death State of physical well-being, then did we EVEN work out today?!

But this is not what all industry leaders focus on.

Russian training dates back to Soviet times. It stresses that we should be ‘training’ our muscles and not overloading them on a regular basis. It believes that working to your maximum causes burn out. Your muscles can lift a lot more than you think, but you basically need to coax them to lift what they are capable of over time. Going hard and heavy can causes a protective inhibitory process. Your muscles do not want to be overloaded and torn and so will become more protective.

By lifting without stress on a regular basis, you increase your ‘strength-skill.’
Strength-Skill states that lifting lower repititions (1-3, but definitely no more than 5) enables you to become efficient at maximising muscle recruitment during a short effort. It also states that you should only be lifting weights at 80-90% of your maximum. Your 80-90% weight increases over time, so you know you are getting stronger – and many believe your strength increases at a much quicker rate than you would usually achieve by reaching an overload at every session.

I found this really interesting, and it is definitely worth a read up on if you have the time or the inclination.
However, there are so many opinions, so many ideas and so many trends about the best way and how to exercise… all that matters is that we do!
